Society members have started to solicit gifts and prizes for our “November Calendar Raffle”. The raffle runs for the entire month of November and is our main fundraiser for the year. The profit from the raffle funds an annual scholarship that is given to a graduating Lee High School senior and supports programs and events that are free and open to the public. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase in September.
The Society will host a Cemetery Walk on Thursday, September 17th of Founders’ Day Weekend. It will be held in Fairmount Cemetery. More information will follow in the September Newsletter.

This photo was given to the society by our friends at the Great Barrington Historical Society, who are sorting out photos taken by a deceased photopher from Great Barrington. If you are family to anyone in the photo, we have four copies available. If anyone has any corrections to the attached names please let us know
.
Hopefully in the next issue we will be getting back to “RECOLLECTIONS” by Vic Mottarella. Because of articles and pictures that members and readers have sent in put our friend and member, Vic on the back burner. He has just sent in an update of his recollections and we will be printing them soon.
Above is a store bill from the store of John W. Ferry. It was sent to us by Margaret Kelly Jackson of Varna, Illinois. She states that this was in her Mom’s Cookbook as long as she remembers. Her mother and Mrs. Ferry were friends and she thinks the Ferry Store was on the corner of High and Center Streets. She remembers that the Ferry daughter, Esther, graduated from Lee High school in the 1930’s. Margaret’s Uncle John and Aunt Mary Kelly lived across the street. Below is a recipe that was hand written on the back of the billing form.
Quickly Made Chocolate Cake
1 cup sugar
1-2/3 cups of flour
4 tablespoons of cocoa
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon soda
1 egg unbeaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sour milk
Beat all together, add 5 tablespoons of melted lard and beat well. Bake in 2 layers or loaf 20 to 30 minutes.
If anyone knows where the Ferry Store was located or has information about Esther, please let us know and if anyone makes this cake let us know how it turns out. For me, the market is much quicker! Also at that time you could probably not set your oven at a certain temperature. Thanks to Margaret for sharing both items with us.
